SP & the DMS (Whittington) Field Gun Team

Many of you over a certain age will no doubt remember the Command Field Gun Competition held every year up until 1999 at the Royal Tournament in Earls Court, London. Even though the Royal Tournament may have disappeared from our Saturday night BBC1 TV screens, the annual military competition is still very much alive and well.

The Field Gun Competition features crews from across the UK and as far afield as Gibraltar, all competing for the coveted Brickwoods Trophy. The competition is fast and furious and requires 18-man teams to run, dismantle, reassemble and fire the 28-pound gun in the shortest time possible. Field Gun is the ultimate military team sport.

We are pleased to announce that we are proudly supporting the Defence Medical Services (Whittington) Field Gun Team for 2017. Steve Bray, SP's Managing Director says "We have proudly been a supplier to our British Armed Forces for over 25 years and I've always believed that business is very much a two way relationship. Defence Medical Services plays a vital role in training today's young military medics and we are honoured to be involved in this prestigious and fun event. We have high hopes of them bring home some silverware this year."

DMS (Whittington) is the home of the Headquarters Surgeon General's Department and the Defence College of Healthcare Education and Training, providing a centre of excellence for training military healthcare personnel as well as strategic vision and leadership for the DMS.

The DMS(W) crew will be taking part in the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity Field Gun Competition which is now held every year at HMS Collingwood in Fareham, Hampshire. This year's final is on Saturday 3rd June, for tickets and further information, please visit the HMS Collingwood facebook page HERE.

Within the Defence Medical Services (DMS), Field Gun has a fine heritage which began at the Defence Medical Services Training Group (DMSTG) at Keogh Barracks in Surrey. In 2014 DMSTG was relocated to DMS (Whittington) near Lichfield in Staffordshire.

Crews now consist of Tri-Service personnel from both the Defence College for Healthcare Education and Training (DCHET) and the Surgeon General’s (SG) Department.

Alastair Richards from the DMS(W) Field Gun Team said "Success on the parade ground would not be possible without the dedicated support of our hard-working backroom volunteers and of course the financial and logistical support of our commercial partners such as Steve Bray and his team at SP Services."

All profits from the competition go to the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity.
